Matthew J. Poirier Car Accident Death Tiverton, Rhode Island Death: The Tiverton community is mourning the death of 40-year-old Matthew J. Poirier, killed in a single-vehicle collision Saturday night. Tiverton Police are investigating the crash near Eight Rod Way and Morning Dove Drive, reported at 8:36 p.m. on April 4, 2026.

Poirier was driving a red Toyota RAV4 when it veered off the roadway and struck a tree with severe force, causing extensive front-end damage. As the sole occupant, he was found unresponsive. Responders performed extrication before transporting him to Rhode Island Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries despite medical efforts.

No other vehicles were involved. The investigation examines trajectory, tire marks, road conditions, and vehicle mechanics—including steering and brakes—to determine why the SUV left the pavement. Police confirm it as a solo accident under review for contributing factors.

“Matthew was a valued community member whose loss is a searing trauma,” a police spokesperson said. “We are committed to providing his family full answers.”
